Barney Miller Classic – Auction/Gala Fundraiser

HOW IT ALL STARTED

The original purpose of the competition was started by good friend and fellow surfer, Joel “Tubby” Bath, in 1999, who created it for a design n technology HSC project to help Barney & his family. Each year since Barney & the Classics committee has raised & donated 100% of the proceeds for a different individual who has suffered a life changing spinal injury. Over the past 19 years they have raised over $150,000 for 18 different families thanks to many incredible sponsors, competitors & a generous community of people.

Barney, 39, has spent 19 years defying medical expectations after a car he was a passenger in smashed into a tree at 120km/h. He went from aspiring pro surfer to months in intensive care and spinal units with doctors telling him he would never breathe unassisted or use his right arm or legs.

Now, he not only breathes on his own, but can stand and is even back in the ocean pursuing his passion for surfing & was crowned World Champion Adaptive Surfer in 2017. Barneys passion is to raise as much money as possible to help those in need & believes that if a community of strangers can get behind & support a family through one of the most challenging times in their life, it can give them the hope they need to get through anything.

This year’s recipient is Jessica Collins, 24 year,  a former Australian surf lifesaving representative.
Jess was stand up paddling out at Snapper Rocks mid last year (2018) when she was pitched forward awkwardly on a wave into a sandbank which broke her C5 vertebra & left her paralysed from the shoulders down.
Jess is still currently in the spinal unit in Ryde Royal Rehab Centre. We are hoping to raise as much money as possible to help her on her journey.
